Food Fight! – An Interactive Book is an iPad storybook that my son and I find really enjoyable. It is a unique and original story about two boys from different worlds who at first seem to have a lot of differences but really have much in common.

First you meet Tim, who is a really picky eater and will eat nothing but sausages for every meal and snack. Next, on another planet inhabited by sausage people, we meet Sammy. Sammy eats nothing but little boys the same way Tom delights in eating sausages. Sammy finds out that there is a place where sausages are eaten and goes to earth to confront Tom. At first they cannot get past their differences but are able to work things out, with a witty surprise ending that children will love.

The illustrations are marvelous here, very colorful and with a 3D effect. I simply loved the details about Sammy’s cravings for boys and I like that he only consumes highly processed and packaged boys, keeping everything kid-friendly. The interactions are fun but not overwhelming and never take away from the main focus here, that being the storytelling.

This is a universal app which will work on both iPad as well as iPhone, and options include reading by oneself or listening to narration and watch as the words become highlighted when spoken. A game, “Star Hunt,” is also added where, I presume one looks for stars hidden among the illustrations to unlock something at the end, but this game did not work for me as I found no starts to tap, something that I found odd. This aside, I really like this charming book and how the two characters come together to settle their differences. In spite of coming from such different backgrounds they really have a lot in common, such as parents who find vegetables to be an important part of diet, even for picky eaters which I found quite endearing. I hope more storybook apps will be coming from writer, Glenn Melenhorst.
